FULLY FUNDED FOR 2007, MRS. CELINE RIENDEAU - Montreal, Canada

Emily has just completed Class 3 at Ngaremara Primary School. She is a feisty and curious young girl, with the potential to excel. Upon meeting with her, I reviewed her report card over the past 3 years and realized she is either bored by what she is studying or she needs to be placed in an environment where studying is the norm. After discussing with her family, they agreed to put her in the boarding component of her same primary school, in order for her to be followed in her studies every evening. Emily will most certainly do much better in this type of environment, and with the other girls, she will be able to practice her much loved skills of hair braiding, of which I got first-hand knowledge while I was there visiting! Emily gives off the impression of being ahead of her age mates and loves to help her mom around the manyatta. She already knows how to cook, clean and care for her younger brother and sister, although what she really wants is to be able to practice more her native language of Kiturkana. As a Turkana girl living in and amongst Samburu people, she is quickly losing her mother-tongue. She talks of becoming a “daktari,” and with her willpower, I am sure she will do a lot for her people in the future!
