George comes from a family of 9 children. Ever since his father and elder sister passed away, he lives in a small 2-room house on the outskirts of Nairobi near Gachie with his mother, 3 brothers and 4 sisters, and his 5 nieces & nephews. He will be starting Class 4 (Grade 3) in January 2007 at Highridge Primary School in Nairobi. Currently, George and his elder brother Edwin (Class 8) have been main breadwinners for the family, selling roasted peanuts to passersby after classes, returning home by matatu (public transport mini-buses) as late as 9:30pm on weekdays. These commitments have not allowed George to focus on his studies, something we’d like to help him do, so that he may succeed in being accepted to a good high school. Of course, George’s mother works hard selling fruits which she buys from a rural market and sells near her home. The family is currently barely making ends meet, and so your help would come as a great relief, especially for the mother, who would be happy to see George come home early and do his schoolwork properly. Our goal is to help get George off the streets at night, when Nairobi is unsafe and he is exposed to theft from local street boys high on glue, extortion from Nairobi City Council authorities, and general insecurities of a big city. Your help would also allow George to pursue his education to the end, and offer his mother, nieces and nephews a safer life and hope for a better future. For now, George is excited about the Christmas holidays when he can “eat chicken & drink soda!”
