Dickson is an ingenious young man who I met walking around Morulem, a village about 14 hours drive from Nairobi. He had a camera around his neck and it made me curious. Upon enquiring what its purpose was, I was told he went around to various local events, gatherings, weddings, ceremonies and snapped photos of people, who then put downpayments on the prints, and thus gave him the capital to go develop the photos in a nearby town (2 hours' drive away). He would then deliver the photos to the client an make a profit on the individual print. Ingenious! On top of this, Mr. Loruwan seems to be doing quite well in school and is anxious to finish High School and move on to university medical studies. His strongest subjects are effectively mathematics and biology. As the 2nd of 6 children, he knows what it means to "help around the house." In his free time he manages to keep fit by playing football on his local team, "Greenfield." Your contribution to Dickson's education would allow him to become the surgeon he dreams of being, and his entrepreneurial nature assures me that he will do fine once given the proper tools. In fact, he's already requested I send him a calculator to start monitoring his business a little better!
