FULLY FUNDED FOR 2007: Mr. Marco Gervais, Bermuda

Onesmus is a 15 year old student living in Lodwar town, Turkana District. He has just recently been awarded his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education and is hoping to begin High School in January 2007. Given his high rankings he is likely to be called to a National School, which then gives him a better chance of getting into University. He comes from a very poor family of 12 children, all raised in the raid-prone village of Kapeddo. Due to their proximity to neighbouring tribes, these people are more susceptible to cattle raids and banditry. In fact, Onesmus’ parents were both killed during such raids, leaving their 12 children orphaned. Getting through school has therefore been difficult, and in Onesmus’ case, he decided to leave home and live with a school teacher as his house help in return for second-hand clothing, food and education. The rest of his siblings who were able to put themselves through secondary school have not yet attained income levels that have allowed them to help him with his school fees. He still has 4 brothers attending secondary school, currently assisted by their uncles. Onesmus has been doing very well in class and strongly hopes to be able to pursue his studies through to secondary school in 2007, and eventually become a lawyer. Your help would allow Onesmus to securely get through high school and then pursue his dreams of fighting corruption in the Kenyan context. For now, he helps his mother fetch water at the river, and stays a fervent Arsenal football fan!
