Paulo was born and raised in the isolated village of Morulem in the semi-arid district of Turkana, in northern Kenya. As the second born in a family of 8 children, he has learnt the meaning of responsibility. I asked him what he does in the village when he is not in school and without hesitation he answered “I help.” How many other 17 year old boys would have responded in this way? He will be starting Form 2 at RCEA Lokori Secondary in 2007, and has hopes of entering the medical field, either as a doctor or a dentist…eventually. His strongest subject at the moment is Biology, so he’s on the right track. It is clear when speaking to Paulo that he has a kind heart, he is humble but confident at the same time. He spoke of his mother as being a farmer in the local irrigation scheme, but didn’t say anything about his father. I guess going to school for Paulo represents more than just education and a degree, it means he will eventually become the head of his family; responsibility starts young and you can see Paulo has understood that for some time now. Help Paulo repay his mother the time and effort she put into raising him safely and keeping him healthy until now.
