Akuwom is a vibrant 15 year old girl living in Morulem, a tiny village about 14 hours drive from Nairobi in Turkana District. She has just graduated from primary school in November 2006, with top marks in the district! She now has options of where she wants to pursue her high school studies, and she has placed Alliance Girls’ School, Kenya High School and Loreto Girls’ School first on her list. In January 2007 she will receive her invitation letters and will begin class soon after. Her strongest subject is Mathematics, a good path since she plans on becoming a nurse or a doctor. She grew up in a farming community with her 4 brothers and younger sister. Her mother tills the fields while her father brings the goats and cows as far as 30km away to graze, typical of the pastoralist way. When Akuwom is out of school, she helps her mother around their small compound, and enjoys reading books, a luxury in these parts given the fact that there is no electricity for light. The peaceful village life allows her the time to recite poems in her vernacular. Educating a girl in this community would be a great step towards the realization of gender equality in this small community. I’m hoping to use Akuwom as a role model for future Turkana women to stay in school and complete their studies. Your help in this case would do more than just educate a girl-child, it would educate a community.
